Light in the Darkness: The Story of Elizabeth Fry

LENGTH: 45 minutes (Performed since 2006) Also appropriate for Christmas

A Christian drama about being the light of Christ

Light in the Darkness dramatizes the true story of Elizabeth Fry, a prison reformer, mother, history changer and hero of the faith.

But why should we care about a story that took place 300 years ago? Because we, as believers in the One True Light of the World, Jesus Christ, are often so scared of the darkness that we never venture into its depths. I know I was! For six months I dug in my heels and refused to obey God, who was challenging me to go into the darkness of my local correctional center. It was Elizabeth Fry’s story that gave me courage to obey. Where is it God is asking you to go? Do you know you have the light of Christ and the power of God at your disposal? Oh, the stories I have of the goodness of God extended to women who never would have heard the good news of our Savior if we Christians had been too afraid to go!

Light in the Darkness dramatizes the true story of Elizabeth Fry and her friends who weren’t afraid to shine the light of Christ behind the cold stone walls of Newgate Prison in London, England in the early 19th Century. Elizabeth Fry, a mother of eleven children, could not overlook the desperate plight of women and their children who were imprisoned with them. She believed that the power of the gospel, combined with practical help would go a long way in changing conditions in England’s most notorious prison. Her work would catch the attention of Queen Victoria and even Parliament! Her actions changed the deplorable conditions in England’s prisons and affected how they were run. Canada’s Elizabeth Fry Society is named in her honor.

In my drama, Light in the Darkness, Annie, a hardened inmate, watches Mrs. Fry and her lady friends help the children and the women in Newgate in many practical ways. Along with the changes this brings, another is added. Mrs. Fry insists on reading the Bible, regularly! To Annie this all seems a waste of time until the day of her sentencing arrives and she must decide for herself whether she believes in the One Mrs. Fry keeps reading and showing them about – Jesus Christ.

Jesus said about Himself, “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” John 12:46 "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the the shadow of death a light has dawned." Isa 9:2 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way let your light shine before men so they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matt 5:14-16
